What is a Vertical Band Sealer?

Vertical Band Sealer

The vertical band sealer is made to seal stand-up pouches. Think trail mix or coffee beans put into a bag that stands upright. The bags are transported upright along the conveyor as the seal is being made.

The machine can seal all types of thermoplastic materials, including PP, PE, co-extruded stand-up pouches, gusseted bags, and moisture barrier bags. The vertical band sealer is widely used in the food, medical, chemical, cosmetic, and electronic industries.

The contents are placed into the pouch and then onto the vertical bag sealer conveyor for seal and closure. The upright position reduces the likelihood of spills, compared to a horizontal band sealer where the bags are laid flat.

Seals are created using PTFE bands, which ensure high seal quality and consistently produce strong, clean seals on all heat-sealable bags. Sealing performance can be adjusted with the temperature and speed. It is ideal for sealing above a reclosable zipper for a tamper-evident seal on the shelves.

As the pouches are fed into the sealer, which has a maximum speed of 39 feet per minute, the machine uses heat and pressure to create a wide 8 mm air-tight seal. A print and embossing option accommodates three sections with up to fifteen characters per line.

Vertical band sealers can speed up production and efficiency. Users can expect to seal between 20 – 30 stand-up pouches per minute with the vertical band sealer.

The variable height adjustment can accommodate a bag up to 12 inches high and up to an eight mil thickness. The width of the bag does not matter because of the conveyor system. The maximum recommended weight for the conveyor is 6.6 lbs. Excessive weight can cause wear to conveyor parts.

The machine is easy to use. Minimal operator training is required. You adjust the settings to the desired result, then feed the bags through the conveyor.

The unit feeds right to left with an optional left-to-right feed available. It’s equipped with a bag entry guide for easy bag feeding and straight seals. The guide that helps transport bags into the sealer is made of stainless steel and is easy to clean. The control panel includes an industrial-grade safety emergency stop switch to promptly halt production if needed.

The conveyor will transport the material between two heating blocks, bringing the two open ends together. The bag will then pass through the cooling blocks, allowing the material to settle. Finally, the container will pass through the embossing wheel for a meshed seal line. This is where embossed date codes can be added if desired.

The machine is comprised of a stainless-steel frame, speed control knob, a digital temperature control system, and a cooling motor. Adjustments can be made on the front control panel of the machine.

For setup, the vertical stand and sealer must be attached before operation. In addition to the stand, a vertical umbrella shaft will need to be installed. See our setup video below.

Place the band sealer in the desired location, ensuring an electrical power source is available. Make sure the proper electrical wiring is provided to guard against low voltage. If the voltage is too low, the equipment will not function properly.

Finding the proper location is the most critical step in the initial setup. You must consider several factors:

  • Adequate power source
  • Relationship to the source of the product
  • Production area space
  • Relationship to any conveyors necessary to transport the finished product
  • Easily accessible and comfortable for operators

The vertical band sealer requires minimal maintenance to extend the machine’s lifespan. Daily maintenance includes cleaning the sealing belts from any build-up from the upright pouches. It is also recommended to wipe down the conveyor daily to prevent excess materials from becoming caught in the belt.

Do not use water to wash down the machine. A shop cloth and silicone spray are suggested. Do not apply silicone directly to the sealer.

If the machine is used more than four hours per day, it is recommended you service the machine every three months. If used less frequently, a six-month service cycle can be employed.

Annual maintenance includes checking the condition of the sealing and drive belt and replacing if necessary. You should also add lubricating grease to the gears, check the condition of the rubber wheel and clean the turbo case, and change the oil in it.

The vertical band sealer is the choice of producers across multiple industries because of its variable height and speed, its wide range of possible applications, its ease of use, and simple maintenance. It helps to keep contents fresh and tamper-proof.
