Shrink Packaging System Troubleshooting

Shrink packaging systems are all-in-one shrink wrap machines made for moderate use. Also known as shrink chambers and one-step machines, shrink systems have a sealer and heater, all enclosed under a lid or hood.

When the lid is closed with the product and material inside the chamber, the sealer seals and cuts the material. After the set seal time is complete, a fan turns on to circulate heat within the chamber to shrink the film around the package.

With enough use, some issues may arise with your machine. If something goes wrong, downtime can be costly. We have compiled some general troubleshooting suggestions if your machine experiences issues. Several manufacturers produce shrink packaging systems. Each system is made differently, and these are only suggestions based on the brands we offer.

Some common issues when it comes to troubleshooting your shrink packaging systems include:

Shrink Packaging System Band Ribbon

  • NO HEAT TO BAND RIBBON (Sealing Element)
  • Check that the sealer is plugged in and that power is present at the socket. Ensure the power switch is in the SEAL ONLY on position or SEAL AND SHRINK position.
  • Make sure the seal timer is not set to zero (0).
  • Check pulse switch adjustment.
    • Make sure the microswitch is being activated when the seal bar is within 1/8” of contact with the seal pad.
    • Press the switch by hand. If no click is heard, replace the switch.
  • Check all fuses.
  • Check to see if the CR1 contactor is ok, if the points are not burned, or if no wire has come loose.
  • Check for voltage present at both primary and secondary transformer.
  • Check for broken band ribbons inside or outside the corner block.
  • Check for bad connections on each end of the band ribbon. Make sure wires are connected to each end of the compensator block where the ends of the sealing wire connect.
  • For the automatic machines, check the solid-state relay to make sure no wires have come loose.

Poor Film Cutoff

  • WEAK SEALS AND/OR POOR FILM CUT-OFF
  • Make sure that the seal timer is set to the proper settings.
  • Ensure that the proper operating technique is being used. Too much film tension can cause issues. Make sure the film is relaxed before sealing.
  • Check band ribbon to see if cleaning or replacement is necessary. Use only a soft cloth to clean. Do not scrub or the coating will come off.
  • If Teflon tapes become burned or worn, a weak seal may occur. Replacement may be necessary.
  • If the rubber sealing pad appears burnt or damaged, it can hamper seals.
  • Make sure the seal pad pressure is appropriately making contact with the seal pad.

Magnetic Holddown

  • MAGNETIC HOLD DOWN ON SHRINK CHAMBER
  • If the seal head will not stay down and the machine operates normally, check the fuses F1 through F5. Replace if burned.
  • Check the shrink (time) setting. Make sure it is not set at 0.
  • Check for proper voltage at the primary transformer (T1).
  • Check for correct voltage output from secondary of transformer if applicable.

Shrink Packaging System fan

  • NO AIRFLOW
  • Check all fuses.
  • Check the blower wheel to see if it is tight on the center hub. If loose, tighten the bolts holding the fan blade to the hub.
  • Check the blower motor to make sure no wires are loose.
  • Check the capacitor and replace it if it is bad.
